Maslyana. Pancake week begins.

undefined

One of the most fun holidays in Ukraine is Maslyana.

Celebration has its origins in pagan tradition. It was a sun festival, dedicated to God Veles (major Slavic god of earth, waters, forests and the underworld). Pancake symbolized spring beginning with yellow, warm, round sun raising after long snowy winter.
Most popular pancake fillings are: cottage cheese, honey, cherries, apples, meat, smoked salmon.

Ancient Ukrainian feast was included in Christian calendar. Each year date of celebration changes. This year Maslyana starts March 7th and lasts for 7 days.
